Cut-off Machine Safety in Landscaping

Cut-off machines are high-speed, fast-cutting power tools used in landscaping to cut concrete, asphalt and metal. Not surprisingly, these powerful machines can be very dangerous if not used properly.

Prepare Yourself

Before using your cut-off machine, it is critical for you to read and understand the operator’s manual. Don’t use a machine unless you’ve been trained by either your equipment dealer or an experienced co-worker.

Be sure you have all the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for the job, including eye protection, ear protection, a respirator or dust mask, sturdy shoes with nonslip soles and fireproof clothing (if you’re cutting something that will produce sparks).

Many materials present hazards when cut. Know the nature of the material you are cutting and the safety and health hazards associated with it. This will help you choose the appropriate PPE to keep yourself safe.

Use Your Cut-off Machine Safely

You should always use a cut-off machine for the work it is made for and with the proper attachments. Never modify the machine yourself in any way, and only use attachments authorized by the manufacturer.

The wheels you use are just as important as the attachments. Only use wheels authorized by the manufacturer with approved RPM ratings, and make sure the wheels you use are specifically designed for the type of material you’re cutting.

Never use chipped abrasive wheels or toothed blades of any nature on a cut-off machine, including circular saw blades, carbide-tipped blades, rescue blades and wood-cutting blades.

Check your surroundings before cutting and make sure there are no bystanders. If you’re near a client’s house, make sure the windows and doors are closed. Adjust the safety guard on the machine so it deflects cut material away from you.

Always start the machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never drop start it—this is extremely dangerous and can make you lose control of the machine.

Stay Clear of Kickback Forces

Kickback is the violent reaction that throws the machine and wheel from an object when the upper quadrant of the wheel, the “kickback zone,” touches the object. Kickback could cause you to lose control of the machine and seriously injure yourself or others.

To avoid kickback, never start to cut with the kickback zone and always hold the machine in a firm grip with both hands.
