Zeiler Insurance Services, Inc. holds multiple internship programs throughout the year. We would like to introduce you to our Spring Intern, Michael McLaughlin:
My name is Michael McLaughlin and I am from Hickory Hills, Illinois. I am currently a sophomore at Saint Xavier University triple majoring in accounting, finance, and history. I play soccer at Saint Xavier and am a member of the Financial Management Association. Outside of school my favorite things to do are spend time with friends and family, try new foods, and read anything that has to do with history or philosophy. Up to now I have worked as a soccer referee, a soccer coach for little kids, and as a sales associate at PacSun. I am not exactly sure what I want to do after college but I plan on becoming a Certified Public Accountant. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to work at Zeiler Insurance because it is my first time working in a professional environment, I am already learning a lot about the insurance industry and business in general, and the people who I am working under are amazing.
The decision to work at Zeiler Insurance this spring was a very easy one to make. Luke was my coach at Saint Xavier my freshman year. I learned a lot as a player under him and really liked the way he got the team motivated to play every game. The thought of getting my first internship was something that always made me nervous, so the opportunity to do it with someone I knew made it a lot less nerve wracking. The fact that Zeiler Insurance is so close to both my house and school is another reason why this opportunity is great for me. The proximity of Zeiler to school allows me to work in the morning before my classes or in the afternoon after classes. Luke was extremely understanding and flexible when allowing me to create my schedule which is yet another thing that I am very thankful for. Beside this, I knew that getting to know the insurance industry, especially through a company like Zeiler, was a great opportunity for someone my age. The insurance industry is one of the most stable industries and it provides you with the opportunity to help people. That can mean giving people peace of mind by knowing they are covered in case anything bad were to happen or walking them through the chain of events following an unfortunate event occurring.
My first two weeks working at Zeiler Insurance have been a lot of fun. I am learning a lot about the insurance industry every day. The three people I work most closely with are Sarah, Matt, and Maleeny. Shadowing Sarah has taught me so much about the role of a dispatcher. I have learned how the check the insurance carrier websites, set alerts and suspenses about customer policies, answer customer phone calls, send and receive company mail, and much more. I also had the awesome opportunity to have a Q&A session with Mrs. Ross from Traveler’s. I learned about many careers in the insurance industry which I had not previously known about. It was also very interesting to hear about insurance from the viewpoint of the carrier. Everyone at Zeiler has been extremely friendly, helpful, and informative. I feel at home at Zeiler and am very excited for the weeks to come!
