When the matriarch of the Harris family died five years ago, her home was handed down to her son. He continued to pay the mortgage and the insurance policy, and the appropriate name changes were made with the mortgage company and the Recorder of Deeds Office.
A fire caused by the furnace last January gutted the 3 flat from top to bottom.
The son of course turned to his homeowners insurance to collect - and to his surprise he learned he had been paying for insurance that his insurance company says he never really had.
Although the deed was changed to his name, and the mortgage company was made aware of the mother's death, news of her death never trickled down to the insurance company. The family said they never knew they needed to contact them.
